The Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco is named after a lighthouse located at Helgoland Bight off the Dutch coast in the North Sea. It was a landmark for seafarers and was well known to Swedish radio listeners, as the weather reports mentioned Borkum Riff several times a day.

Borkum Riff pipe tobacco is a tobacco created and launched by Bertil Sandegård in Sweden in the 1960s. It was initially a raw blend of Virginia and Burley tobaccos. The manufacturer's idea was to market the blend in the United States. Initially the product was not very popular but with the introduction of the Bourbon Whiskey variant in 1969, sales increased. Since then, new flavors and new packaging have been introduced. Since 2011 the Borkum Riff brand, produced by Swedish Match in Denmark, is part of the Scandinavian Tobacco group and is sold all over the world. Borkum Riff's largest market, however, is still the United States.

Borkum Riff Original: composed of Virginia and Burley tobaccos, it is a rather natural tobacco flavored with a light touch of Vanilla. A tobacco with character but soft to smoke

Borkum Riff Vanilla Cavendish: a fermented blend that comes from a mix of dark Kentucky and Burley enriched with vanilla. Intense aroma and taste.

Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish: a fermented blend that comes from a mix of dark Kentucky and Burley enriched with cherry and a hint of vanilla. Rather sweet aroma.

Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey: A blend of Virginia and Burley flavored with 8-year-old Kentucky Bourbon. Perhaps the most interesting and popular blend among Borkum Riffs (especially for beginners ).
